Stashbusting - Ann-Gerd

Stashbusting

Do you have to much yarn? I do!!!

There are gigantic yarnstashes hidden in secret and loved places. To much yarn is sitting in baskets, shelves, boxes and bags. We have to figure out how to use it - and sustainable crafters!

To do lists... Go to work, pick up kids, drop of the gymclothes, submit the next project, remember dinner on saturday, cook tonight drive but not to fast, get vegetables and flour, get more yarn and feel better... We live busy lives. To busy. Somehow I just din't get around to using all my yarnhauls. I want to do somthing about that. So I have looked and collected tools for to get into my stash and do beautiful projekts. I want to share them with you!

It does matter what we do as crafters when the subject is sustainability. We do have the skills to mend, to create and rethink our households. Working in a sustainable way is the most interesting challenge as a crochet designer. Talking to women, that knit or crochet, I have realised that we need to talk about how to stashbust!

"Using the yarn in your storage is a challenge!"

Stashbusting

Using the yarn in your storage is a challenge. How do you combine the colors? How does different kind of fibres work together? What can you do if you run out of a specific kind of yarn?

"As a designer it is essential to me that sustainability is a part of everything that i do. How can it be deeply ingrained in my workproces and my products?"

One year of Stashbusting!

I defined a sustainability challenge for stashbusting: Stop byuing yarn and bust that stash for a year! Can you do that?

At the face of it - it sounds simple! But, if it should really work we need good tools! These tools have to help us:

HOW do i actually "attack" my yarnstash?
WHAT can i actually do to reduce my yarnstash?
WHERE can I get help?

I got this list in mind:

  1. Clean up your stash and get organised! Trust me, justlooking at your yarn and winding it wil release a huge amount of inspiration. Pretty organised balls are such an inspiration.
  2. Kill your babies! YES! use that precious yarn skien that you have been keeping in your stash for years. Use it! I bet you got more than one skien that is a favorite? well, then go ahead!
  3. Let it go! Are you honestly going to use all your yarn? Should some of it go? Could you sell, give away, donate or recycle the yarn that you are not going to use?
  4. Working with color saturation (red. Valør in danish) in my patterns and demonstrate how to do this.
  5. Seek inspiration for color palettes. As an eksample, look at a artwork of an billiant artist eg. Pipllotti-Vrist.
  6. Working with yarncards. It is the easy way of testing and planning your choice of colours. It can also save you a lot of frogging!
  7. Working several strands of color. Either to hit your stash hard og to incorporate more subtle nuances and textures.
  8. Go for the good quality :-) Just maybe you can go for a little of the high end quality sustainable yarn to make your project even better? The better the quality, the better result!

What do i fint particularely interesting working with crochet patterns?

  1. I work in a very generic set of yardage (red. løbelængde) so my patterns go well with a huge range of yarns.
  2. Make patterns that ‘grow’ with the kids! The wonders (red. the kids) hardly ever wear out their clothes. Creating clothes that can grow along with the kids have to be explored.
  3. Make patterns that include all sizes. One of the GREATEST things about being able to make your own clothes, is the fact that it fits me perfectly. I love that! I don’t have to feel weird and big and tall in a fashion shop. And i’m really just a normal person with a solid build.
  4. Make patterns for good quality yarn, that will last long and look beutiful

Do you have a good idéa?

If you have a great idéa for busting your stash I would love you to share it with the yarn community! The more we can exchange great idéas and strategies, the more likely we are to actually hit the nail!
